Archaeological excavations in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, have unearthed the remains of an ancient Roman cemetery going back 2,000 years.
The find was uncovered as bulldozers were excavating for a municipal housing project sponsored by Egypt.
Ministry of Public Works and Housing was alerted to stop building and cordon off the area, according to an official statement.
An archaeological committee was established to investigate the find, determine its historical significance, and offer suggestions on how to proceed with it, according to the statement.
Several individuals utilized donkey-drawn carts to plunder various antiquities from the site, revealing that many villagers in the vicinity had discovered many antiques such as coffin lids and engraved bricks a week before the ministry's statement.
An attempt was made to contact the Ministry of Tourism Antiquities for comment, however the ministry declined to issue any media statement until the site assessment and appraisal were completed.
After discovering old stones in the region, a witness tells Al-Monitor that a number of residents had been unlawfully excavating.
