This is the 2019 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 523bhp BMW M850i xDrive and oh boy is it loud, fast and a lot of fun to drive, it's agile, snazzy, sexy, with the roof up or down, it's a head turner and despite its added weight, it's no slacker against the coupe version at all.
It's got a lot of torque, enough to push you to the seat in sports mode, yet designed to keep your hair intact and your neck warm during those cold winter days....or nights. It will do 0 to 62 in under 4 seconds despite its 2015kg kerb weight, you have plenty of visibility with its long bonnet and I can't say the same for space in the back for the passengers but I doubt you'll use the back seats for carrying passengers, more like space to carry your pets or to quickly dash your golf bag. The front looks mean with a one-piece grille in true BMW style, it has a lower centre of gravity, seats higher than the coupe and you get that trapezal exhaust on the back, its side profile looks stretched, yet elegant and the roof can retract in 18 seconds even while driving up to around 50KPH. On the back, the tail lights are slimmer and the trapezial exhaust gives it a snazzy look.
Inside you have plenty of tech to keep your passenger entertained and also assist you for your journey. You have a big display with BMW's latest iDrive 7, crystal clear sound system although with too much bass when the roof is down, it does rattle the boot, the interior is finished in Merino leather in black to match and the steering is cover in leather too. As a sports car, I wished BMW used D-shaped steering, but there is plenty of leg room and space to get in and out regardless. The steering as all the buttons you need to control the infotainment system and when you feel like stretching your hands, you can use the display's touchscreen panel which you can also modify to suit your style. You also get heads up display to keep your eyes on the road. There are plenty of ports available, including a USB C port and you even get BMW's own Siri that learns from you over time, the more you use it. you can say stuff like, hey BMW, I'm cold, and it will adjust the car temperature.
What's even more stylistically impressive, is the handcrafted crystal glass gear stick, it just looks amazing and I can't stop taking pictures of it.
So how does it drive?
With a V8 engine, you just have to bask in the volume of how the engine sounds, it's music to my ears, heck any petrol-head. You'll like how it pops when you take your foot off the gas pedal and the M850i gives plenty of confidence when cornering, it just grips the road like they were one. Not many cars you can drive like that with confidence that where you point the steering when you point it is where it will go. I also like that the drive assist tech didn't interfere too much. With an adaptive steel-sprung M sport suspension, it's firm and adapts well to the England roads. When it comes to practicality, be prepared to spend on fuel and when it comes to space, you get a 350-litre space in the boot and there are plenty of extras to spend extra on like laser lights, parking assistant plus and more, although you do get parking cameras in this one. and did I forget to mention, I just love it in this carbon black colour?
