This week we say goodbye to family and Poland and continue our adventure traveling the world. We're heading to the country of Georgia and we'll be living in Kutaisi for the next month.
We'll be staying in the country for close to 6 weeks. The first city we're staying in is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Kutaisi.
We'll be sharing more of our adventures around the city as we continue to explore and visit different places.
Kutaisi is a city located in the Imereti region of Georgia, a country in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. It's one of the oldest cities in Georgia and has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Here are some key points about Kutaisi:
Historical Significance: Kutaisi has been an important center for trade, culture, and politics for centuries. It was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis and later the Kingdom of Imereti. It has witnessed numerous invasions, political changes, and cultural developments over the years.
Geography and Location: The city is situated in western Georgia, along the banks of the Rioni River. Its strategic location has contributed to its historical importance as a crossroads for various trade routes.
Cultural and Architectural Heritage: Kutaisi boasts a variety of historical and architectural landmarks. One of the most famous is the Bagrati Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built in the 11th century and stands as an example of medieval Georgian architecture. Another notable site is the Gelati Monastery, also a UNESCO site, known for its religious and educational significance.
Parliament Building: Kutaisi served as Georgia's legislative capital from 2012 to 2019. During this time, the newly constructed Kutaisi Parliament Building became the venue for sessions of the Georgian Parliament. However, in 2019, the capital was moved back to Tbilisi, the country's largest city.
Economic and Industrial Hub: Kutaisi is an important industrial center in Georgia. It's known for its manufacturing sector, producing items such as textiles, food products, and machinery.
Education and Universities: The city is home to several universities, including Akaki Tsereteli State University. These institutions contribute to the city's academic and cultural atmosphere.
Transportation: Kutaisi is served by the David the Builder Kutaisi International Airport, which has played a role in boosting tourism and economic activity in the region. The city's location on major transportation routes also facilitates movement within the country and beyond.
Tourism: In recent years, Kutaisi has been gaining popularity as a tourist destination. Visitors are drawn to its historical sites, natural beauty, and authentic Georgian culture. The surrounding region offers attractions like the Prometheus Cave and the nearby Martvili Canyon.
Local Cuisine: Georgian cuisine is famous for its unique flavors, and Kutaisi is no exception. Traditional dishes like khachapuri (a cheese-filled bread) and local wines are popular among both locals and tourists.
Overall, Kutaisi is a city that beautifully blends its rich history with modern developments. Its historical significance, architectural treasures, and cultural heritage make it a compelling destination for those interested in exploring Georgia's past and present.
