I was robbed of my cell phone by a thief on a motorcycle, I made several mistakes in this situation:
1) I made myself a target by having stood in a line for an ATM at a busy street, and upon leaving the line I pulled out my phone to search for another ATM on Google Maps bc this line was taking too long to move.
2) I was too focused on my phone and not staying alert of my surroundings, the robber saw this and kept on the trail.
3) I shouldn't have chased after him, and dropping my bluetooth radio during the pursuit was probably the best thing that could've happened there. My ADHD kicked in and I stopped to pick it up, something that might have saved me from a much more grave situation. Who knows if he had a weapon on him, a phone can be replaced and not worth risking my life over it.
4) I had my spare shitty phone at home and instead decided to take out my iphone because I had a false sense of comfort in the neighborhood. Never get complacent on the streets, like Jay-Z said "the streets is watching, blocks keep clocking, waiting for you to break, make your first mistake"
I still love Colombia and this hasn't deterred me from returning, all it did was serve as a wake up call to exercise more street smarts. Also soon after this I joined a boxing gym to deal with the emotions of being victimized, and I was able to speak with those I love who were there for me to help in the healing process. If you're ever robbed, it's a horrible feeling and it can take you to a dark place if you let it. Looking back at this in hindsight my perspective is healthier than immediately after. It takes time to heal and I recommend occupying your mind with productive things and finding someone to speak to about it. The best thing I did was owning this moment and using it as something to better myself and try helping others. You're not alone.
