After receiving the flu vaccine, it takes about two weeks for your body to build up antibodies that protect against the flu. OB/GYN Marguerite Demarest Sandow, MD, explains if you still get the flu after being vaccinated, it may be because you were exposed to the flu before your body builds up immunity, or you may have been exposed to a flu virus strand that is not included in the seasonal flu vaccine. But by getting the vaccine, your symptoms are likely to be less severe.
