Alexander Olawaiye, MD, FRCOG, FACOG, FACS, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, provides an overview of current research assessing hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) surgery in ovarian cancer. The procedure was initially developed in patients with colorectal cancer, and results from the Phase III PRODIGE 7 trial (NCT00769405) determined HIPEC to be non-superior to cytoreductive surgery. However, another study suggested HIPEC did confer a survival advantage in ovarian cancer, and did not result in worse toxicity.
