Brihadeshwara Temple, which dominates the entire landscape, was built by the Chola King Raj Raja (985-1016) tower of the temple marks the crowning glory of the Chola architecture.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva this masterpiece of Dravidian art has its Viman crowned with a dome of a monolithic rock of granite weighing over 81.5 tons.

This was hauled up inch by inch along an eastern ramp, especially built for this purpose, and which extended 6 kms. in length.

It is one of the largest South Indian temples
and an exemplary example of a fully realized Tamil architecture. It is called as Dhakshina Meru (Meru of south).

Built by Tamil king Raja Raja Chola In between 1003 and 1010 AD, the temple is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Great Living Chola Temples", along with the Cholam dynasty era Gangaikonda Cholapuram
temple and Airavatesvara temple that are about 70 kilometres (43 mi) and 40 kilometres (25 mi) to its northeast respectively.

This thousands year old magnificent
architecture clearly shows the super skills of our
ancestors. Sadly, we don't read about

One peculiar feature is that the shadow of the Vimana or the dome does not fall on the floor at any time of the day.
