Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is a liver disease that's caused by inflammation caused by excess fat cells in the liver. It's was known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and is a major cause of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. MASH is often associated with obesity, diabetes, high lipid levels in the blood, and other metabolic disorders. Symptoms of MASH are often silent or non-specific. Special tests can identify patients with liver scarring. A new drug (Rezdiffra) was approved the FDA for patients with MASH and liver scarring. Rezdiffra is a daily pill and works by increasing the metabolic rate of liver cells, causing them to burn away excess fat in the liver.
