Collected from the stem of a palm tree that sprouts into coconuts, this traditional Kiribati technique teaches us how to extract the nectar known as Kaleve by the locals. This delicious liquid tastes nothing like coconut water, but is entirely unique. Each sip is a sweet satisfying sensation full of vitamins; hands down the most tasty and delicious drink I have ever had in my entire life! The men will climb to the top of the coconut palm tree and prepare the tree over the course of about three days before getting a full bottle. This liquid can also be fermented into coconut wine, some of the best wine I've ever experienced! Even the process of collecting this tasty drink is beautiful. Walking down the street you hear men singing beautiful songs from the tops of the trees. In other news, we go out fishing and I catch my first Ono! As tasty of a food as Kaleve a drink.. I definitely got spoiled during my time on Fanning, something I miss with all the bland grocery store food back at home. Subsistence living off the land sure is fun! After spending the entire day having a great time gathering food we enjoy the fruits of our labor aboard the sailing boat getting drunk with good friends. White wine and beer is a rarity out in these parts!
