The story of Abbeville and the eventual evolution of fire protection in
this community goes back to the late 1700 and early 1800’s. The area around Abbeville was settled in 1758 by a group of French Huguenots, Scotch and Irish immigrants in search of a place where they could worship and live freely. A French Protestant once said, “We have found what we
were looking for…” in South Carolina.
