For many visitors, a day on Rottnest Island is all about snapping selfies with the resident quokkas (one of Australia's smallest wallabies). But 'Rotto' (as Perthites call it) has so much more to offer. In this video, we take you on a day trip to fabulous Rottnest – 19 kilometres off the coast from the Western Australian capital - and give you tips for top things to do on the island.
We travel with Rottnest Express, which operates a fast ferry service from Perth and Fremantle. Rottnest hasn’t always been the holidaymaker’s utopia that it is today. Known to the Noongar First People as Wadjemup, the island served as an Aboriginal prison from the late 1830s for close to a century. Our first stop is the Wadjemup Museum to chat with Brendan Moore – a Whadjuk Traditional owner – about the island's significance.
From there, we head off explore the island on a bus tour, taste-test a celebrated local specialty, and of course, meet the quokkas!
