An electric arc furnace is a high-temperature furnace, that uses high-voltage electric currents as its primary element, and the electric arc is produced between the electrodes. This Electric arc is used for melting the metal.
Invented in France in 1907, this furnace is a crucial part of iron and steel recycling operations.
There are mainly three main types of electric arc furnaces. They are;
▶ Direct electric arc furnace
▶ Indirect electric arc furnace
▶ Submerged electric arc furnace
The main parts of the electric arc furnace are the roof, hearth (lower part of the furnace, where molten metal is collected), electrodes, and side wall.
The working principles of an electric arc furnace include charging the electrodes, melting the metal, and refining.
