The next AMG to feature a charging port will be the new Mercedes E-Class in the '53' version, available in both sedan and wagon body styles. While electrification usually comes with a downsized combustion engine, that's not the case here. Not only does this AMG Lite version still have the inline-six engine, but the 3.0-litre petrol mill also produces more power than before.
While the old AMG E53 had an output of 429 hp, the model that replaced it had the turbocharged six-cylinder engine massaged to produce 443 hp. The internal combustion engine now works together with a 161 hp electric motor, providing a total system output of 577 hp. When Race Start is activated, which is marketing jargon for launch control, total power temporarily rises to 603 hp. You get a massive torque boost of 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), where the previous model had to make do with 384 lb-ft (520 Nm).
This provides enough electric muscle for the sedan to go from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 3.8 seconds, while the slightly heavier wagon takes an extra 0.1 second. The sedan and SUV duo follows the latest GLE 53 in adopting the plug-in hybrid setup. A battery pack with a usable capacity of 21.22 kWh is mounted under the boot floor. The battery pack supplies its energy to an e-motor built into the nine-speed automatic transmission to save space.
Compared to the non-AMG E-Class, the '53' has a stiffer body, larger brakes and standard rear-wheel steering. The fully variable AWD system is combined with adaptive suspension with variable damping. The sporty E gets a slightly more aggressive design with wider front fenders, an illuminated grille-like grille and round quad exhaust tips. Interestingly, the front axle is slightly wider than in the regular E-Class.
Since the AMG E53 Coupe and AMG E53 Convertible will not come back with the new generation, Mercedes is not planning two-door versions. However, the luxury German brand is replacing these cars with new CLE53 models. These also have inline-six engines but are not plug-in hybrids.
A new E63 is also coming and it is also expected to have a charging port. Unfortunately, the powerful V8 is being phased out to make way for the inline-six. The four-cylinder C63 and V8-powered S63 have already been electrified; This shows that the days of AMG performance cars with pure internal combustion engines are numbered.
