Felice Romani's two act libretto for Rosmonda d'Inghilterra deals with Rosamond Clifford, the supposed mistress of Henry II of England, who died about 1176. Donizetti's opera was sung for the first time at the Teatro della Pergola, Florence, in 1843. The extreme vocal flexibility for which the great American soprano was noted make this aria and its preceding recitative a thrilling listening experience.
