The 2018 Nobel Prize for Physics was jointly awarded to three academics for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics. Half of the prize went to Arthur Ashkin of Bell Labs, and the other half to Gérard Mourou of École Polytechnique, Palaiseau, and the University of Michigan and Donna Strickland of the University of Waterloo for their ‘tools made of light’, which have revolutionized laser physics.
