Indonesian recycling companies are calling for more environment-friendly ways to dispose of increasing electronic waste in the country.
Every day, thousands of discarded tablets, computers, cellphones and other household electronic equipment are thrown out in Indonesia.
This unattended waste brings about serious environmental and health problems.
"There are harmful materials inside electronic equipment that are poisonous if exposed to the air and water around us," said Indra Ananda, an e-waste disposal specialist.
At present, the Indonesian government does not have a concrete plan to deal with e-waste in the country, said Ananda.
It usually ends up in landfills, where parts are indiscriminately burned, but such practices can create toxic fumes that directly affect local communities and the environment.
Environmentalists are urging the Indonesian government to introduce more safe recycling facilities and educate the public on the dangers of disposing electronics irresponsibly.
One company that has already begun to introduce safe recycling is Mukti Mandiri Lestari, which recycles around 1,000 tons of equipment every month, turning them into pure blocks of aluminum, tin, copper.
"We believe in zero waste. All of the electrical and electronic equipment here are categorized based on materials and distributed to various industries so they can use it for their own purposes. Nothing goes to waste," said Wawan Budiawan, the company's president.
With research showing that e-waste worldwide is expected to increase to nearly 50 million tons in 2018, Budiawan calls on people to be more aware of the urgency of properly recycling electronic waste.
"We need people to be more aware of keeping the Earth clean. It is important to start caring now for the sake of our future generations," he said.
