Michael Schöll, PhD, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden, shares his thoughts on the current role of tau-PET in clinical routine. Investigations into tau-PET have demonstrated its value for the early differential diagnosis of dementia, predicting cognitive change more accurately than amyloid-PET or MRI, and as a surrogate outcome measure. While its use has become much more prominent since the approval of the first tau-PET tracer in 2020, tau-PET remains hampered by the lack of validation of visual assessment routines. Prof. Schöll mentions an ongoing study aiming to tackle this, which will collect over 5000 [18F]flortaucipir tau-PET scans and analyze associations between visual assessment features and clinical outcomes.
