In this video, we present our sensorless control solution using the example of an electric wheel hub motor for electric scooters. The drive is tested under heavy duty, especially in the low speed area including standstill and high load.

What is special about this implementation is that the motor under investigation has some characteristics that are very challenging for sensorless motor control, especially at low speeds. The dq-inductances show very strong dependencies on the rotor position and on the motor current. This is due to some geometrical effects and in particular to strong saturation effects. At higher motor currents the so-called anisotropy vanishes and changes its direction. For conventional signal-injection-based methods this leads to a faulty behavior as the observability of the rotor position is lost.
Our sensorless solution overcomes this issue and provides stable control performance over the entire operating range. In one of our next videos we will go into more detail on this topic and also show the characteristics of this motor in more detail.
