Special tools and components are sometimes introduced into oil or gas wells. These can be pre-assembled into sections inside the workshop to make rig site handling more manageable and provide large time saving advantages.
All components that are to be made up are carefully de-greased, cleaned, dried, and visually inspected for any signs of damage.
Special grease is applied to the threads to give consistent and smooth thread engagement and make up. All the items are usually arranged and tightened by hand before loading into the computer controlled torque machine.
The Torque Machine grips the components and tightens the threaded connections to an exact amount of tightness or torque. The machine provides the makeup data in the form of a graph or chart which can be reviewed to make sure the amount of tightness of the connection is within the range specified by thread licensors.
