Firm-level decisions about investments are substantially influenced by stock prices in an efficient environment, where managers appropriately select successful initiatives over those that are less profitable. Art Durnev calls this relationship "investment-to-price sensitivity." He presented a paper showing that in periods of increased political uncertainty, stock prices play a more limited role in guiding corporate investment decisions.
