The MA House is situated in the outskirts of Tepoztlán, a quaint village of pre-Hispanic origin that boasts a colonial city center. Located 60 km from Mexico City, Tepoztlán is renowned for its sunny weather, moderate temperatures throughout the year, and lush vegetation. Water plays a critical role during the rainy season when nature demonstrates its immense vitality.
The project for the MA house is designed to provide a bright, wide, and comfortable space created from a seemingly hard and uncomfortable material: stone. With two large mountains situated on each side of the plot and two neighbors in the opposite direction, the house is an exercise in basic volumetry; it opens up its views and main spaces to the mountains while minimizing openings to the sides. A central and open patio serves as an entryway into the house while also delineating it.
This patio-house does not follow the typical structure; rather than having a central space from which all different relations and circulations stem, the MA house's circulations occur at its external perimeter. A sequence of differently-purposed spaces are situated at the outer edge, creating a generic geometric square.
In addition to the ongoing movement of people within and around the outlines of this project, a further spatial strategy has been designed: a series of open and enclosed areas; the external spaces – such as roofed patios – cross-cut through the volume, dispelling any sense of stiffness in the outline's design.
