Over the last decade Indonesia has become the largest refiner and miner of nickel in the world, and now the industry is on the brink of a second transformation to meet the demands of the rapidly growing electric vehicle battery industry. The ABC travelled to Sulawesi, to an industrial park spearheading this change to EV battery grade nickel. We spoke to people on the frontline of this industry, including locals from an Indigenous community, industrial park workers, shop keepers, an Australian-owned mine executive, and heard stories of positive and negative impacts the industry has already had on their lives, and what this new phase of Indonesia's nickel industry might mean for their future.
