Noun +では + あるまい

will not; will probably not; intend not to; must not


1) When you express your strong will not to do something or tell yourself you are determined not to do something. (The readers can assume that there must have happened something hard or negative to the speakers in past.)

same as 〜しないつもりだ / 絶対〜しない


酒はもう二度と飲むまい。
⇒酒はもう二度と飲まないつもりだ。
I will never drink alcohol again.


人前で泣くまいと決めた。
⇒人前で絶対泣かないと決めた。
I have decided not to cry in front of anyone.


値段は高いし、サービスは最悪だし、もう二度とあんな店に来るまい。
値段は高いし、サービスは最悪だし、もう二度とあんな店に来まい。
I'll never come back to that restaurant again, the prices are too high and the service is terrible.


ガンになって以来、もう二度とタバコを吸うまいと誓った。
Ever since I got cancer, I vowed never to smoke again.


私の犬はどんなおもちゃをあげても喜ばないからもう何もあげまい。
My dog doesn't be happy no matter what toy I give him, so I won't give him any more.


2) When you express your assumption of what other people wouldn’t do/something wouldn’t happen. : probably not/ ~ might not ~/ I assume. / I am sure, I bet ~ is not ~ :

same as〜しないだろう


彼の言うことを誰も信じまい。
⇒彼の言うことを誰も信じないだろう。
No one will probably believe what he says.


この時間なら、終電には間に合うまい。
⇒この時間なら、終電には間に合わないだろう。
If it’s this time, I assume I won't be in time for the last train.


当時私がどれほど苦しかったかは、誰にも分るまい。
Nobody could possibly understand how much I was suffering at that time.


あの自信なさげな顔をしている人がプロのサッカー選手ではあるまい。
I bet the person with that unconfident face is not the professional soccer player.


日本では3人に1人が高齢者になる日も遠くあるまい。
In Japan, it will probably not be long before one out of three persons become senior citizens.
