Petrova held meetings with Moldova's President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu, and Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.
Moldova's European path and related reforms were in the main focus of the talks. The sides also discussed EU support for the former Soviet republic in the context of the many challenges and threats arising from Russia's military aggression against Ukraine.
Petrova voiced support for the strong political will and the determination of the Moldovan government to implement a package of reforms for sustainable development despite the systemic challenges inherited from the past.
The Bulgarian diplomat said: "The support which Europe has been providing to Moldova in various ways will continue. Bulgaria is part of that support. My country made an important contribution as regards the supply of energy resources." Discussing Moldova's European future, she said: "As long as Moldova upholds European values, Europe will continue to support it."
Petrova praised the willingness of the current government in Chisinau to work hard for effective reforms that are necessary for the country's further integration with the EU. "The reforms are not just part of the EU membership criteria, they are an avenue to a better future for the people of Moldova in a community of well-working institutions and opportunities for development for all," she said.
She confirmed Bulgaria's consistent and clear stance in favour of Ukraine's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and acknowledged Moldova's contribution in the present situation, including by helping to tackle the refugee crisis.
During the meetings, the Moldovan officials updated their guests on the challenges confronting the country such as security issues, hybrid and cyber threats, a shortage of energy resources, economic and social problems. They underscored the strategic importance which Chisinau attaches to EU accession and stressed their determination to carry out difficult and important reforms in view of making progress quickly. The hosts provided detailed information on the incipient reforms, with a focus on the rule of law and counter-corruption.
The sides exchanged ideas and practices concerning the role of women in politics and public life, and considered ways to ensure more effective engagement of women leaders in dealing with pressing international issues.
The visiting delegation also had meetings and discussions with NGOs and civil society members, with whom they shared experience and good practices.
