A simple modification of Brandt-Daroff Exercises can increase their effectiveness for the treatment of chronic and recurrent lateral canalithiasis. By looking straight ahead at the wall rather than tilting the head 45 degrees upward lateral canaliths will experience a 180 degree displacement around the circumference of the canal with each repetition rather than only 90 degrees of displacement that occurs when the head is tilted upward 45 degrees. I use this modified exercise as a home treatment for patients who have chronic or recurrent lateral canalithiasis. These exercises are NOT useful for posterior canalithiasis. Use these exercises only if you know you have lateral canalithiasis.
