Soprano Choir Practice: “Ave Maria” for 7 Voices, WAB 6, is Anton Bruckner's most popular setting of the Latin “Ave Maria” . He composed it in 1861to commemorate the founding of a local choral group, the Liedertafel Frohsinn, of which Bruckner was then the director. It starts with female voices in gentle harmony, then male voices add complexity until all join together for three proclamations of Jesus. Then the music builds in waves until the words “hora mortis nostrae”, then gently fading into the “Amen”.
