So last year I saw a little film by the name of "Titane" at the cinema and ever since I heard the song "Light House" during one scene, I was instantly hooked by Future Islands' music. After listening to all their albums repeatedly and seeing numerous videos of live performances, I knew I needed to see them at least once for myself.
2 days ago I finally got the chance when I made my way to Köln/Cologne to see the Baltimore-based band perform at the Live Music Hall for their "Calling Out in Space" tour. This is also the first concert I've ever been to (at least in terms of buying a ticket and embarking on a long trip), so the excitement was through the roof (if you're wondering who's annoyingly singing along in the background... I apologise sincerely in advance).
Throughout the show that started at around 8pm, I recorded a good chunk of footage (on a Galaxy S9 for anyone wondering) that I really wanted to edit together afterwards, and what you see here is an edit of all the material I got. I didn't record everything because I didn't want to experience the show through my phone's screen the whole time, so this video won't include everything out of the band's 90-ish minute performance at the venue. My phone eventually ran out of charge before the last song "Little Dreamer", so I added a portion of it in at the end with a short video of the drive back home.
Overall, this was an absolutely mesmerizing experience, it really was something magical and occasionally unbelievable. Sam Herring is a phenomenal frontman, the endless energy he has and the 200% effort he puts into the shows, it's just out of this world. I can only recommend going to see Future Islands for yourself if you're fond of their music and they're playing near you, it's a wonderful thing to behold.
