The Return of the Seventy Disciples Sermon | Luke 10:17-20
The seventy commissioned and sent out disciples have now returned into the presence of the Lord. We are not told the length of their evangelism and what they experienced, but we are told that they returned with joy. The seventy are successful in that they were focused and faithful in their service. The seventy are ecstatic of the gifting that they have been granted by God. One of the gifts mentioned was the ability to cast out demons or to at least authoritatively control them. Jesus mentions that although demons were subject to His seventy, He Himself was seeing a bigger picture. Jesus was seeing Satan himself fall like lightning from heaven which symbolized Satan's kingdom continually decreasing. Satan's perpetual fall was only quickening through Jesus' established kingdom but was soon to receive the most devastating blow of all, the death and resurrection of our Savior.
