"Hesitate (feat. Emerson Leif)" by Golden Vessel

Genre: #indieelectronic, #downtempo
Sometimes I really wish I was Australian. They just seem to have everything right -- the accent, the beaches, the universal healthcare -- the list goes on. And now I think they might even have us beat on music.
If you haven’t been following, the Australian music scene has been blowing up over the past few years. And I’m not talking about the big names like Sia or Flume, but about the hundreds of new artists and bands that have been subtly sneaking their way onto the charts from the land down under. It’s okay if you’ve been living under a rock because I’m going to let you in on a secret that will help you get caught up in no time -- it’s 22-year-old Brisbane native Max Byrne, a.k.a Golden Vessel. The young Aussie producer has an impressively long discography for only having released his first full-length album this year, and it’s filled with some new and noteworthy names like MTNS, Mallrat, and Lastlings, all hailing from Australia as well.
Emerson Leif is another common collaborator on a lot of Golden Vessel’s work, and “Hesitate” is a perfect example of the good thing these two fellow Brisbanites have going on. According to Leif, the song was written during a period of philosophical exploration: “I found myself feeling very alone and without purpose. I could not accept that we just exist: eat, sleep, work, repeat. We are sold a kind of ‘happiness’ like it’s something we can work towards but what’s on offer is fleeting, if at all”. His introspective lyrics and delicate vocals pair immaculately with Byrne’s ethereal score, prompting thoughts of life and love, truth and loneliness, and everything in between. It’s impossible to listen to this song and not feel something -- damn, the Australians really do have everything right.
