William Hogarth began creating sequential prints that tell complex stories around the same time Henry Fielding and Samuel Richardson were creating the modern novel. His print series were fabulously popular and for the first time expanded ownership of art beyond the church, the aristocracy and the affluent. His images were rich with readable details which made his graphic stories ever more moving and complex. Hogarth saw through artifice and hypocrisy in a way that gives a stark, almost apocalyptic quality to his graphic tales. Some of his images have a strikingly contemporary quality to them and his final image provides a shockingly vivid image of the end of the world right up there with Johnny Cash's version of Trent Reznor's "Hurt."
