Hydrogen Sea expands, but does not bargain its intensity. Automata allows Birsen Uçar and Pieterjan Seaux to lay down ties with the laptop, and to include two brand new band members.
Automata was created at the end of 2017 at deSingel in Antwerp. In the company of the physical and creative presence of Patricia Vanneste (Balthazar), Joris Caluwaerts (STUFF.) and Steven Van Gelder (Tout Va Bien), Hydrogen Sea transformed almost instantly. “The dynamics of our sound completely changed when Steven Van Gelder first played our beats. The same happened at deSingel when Joris and Patricia contributed to the creative process. Everyone could exchange their thoughts and ideas, and that’s something we hadn’t experienced in the past,” Seaux explains.
‘Flogsta’, the first single of the band, combines Uçar’s voice with synths and violin, and tells a tale that is both warm and cold, epic and intimate, playful and timid. Hydrogen Sea does not break with its previous sound, but exchanges digital elements in order to focus on an analogue story. In their previous band setting, Birsen Uçar and Pieterjan Seaux longed for something more human and organic. “We became slaves of our own computers. We encountered restrictions while performing, as communication with laptops is limited. It feels like we’re free at last.”
“In Flogsta, a student ghetto in Sweden, everyone screams out their worries at ten o’clock,” tells Birsen Uçar. If you listen carefully, you’ll hear a sample of their screaming in the song. It’s a way to get rid of their anxieties and stress. It’s a marvelous and, at the same time, truly haunting tradition. It’s a reflection of life itself.”
