Hardly anyone knows the artist, but almost everyone knows her paintings: Tamara de Lempicka, icon of the 1920s. Her Art Déco paintings of women in cars or in evening dress adorn book covers and break auction records. They fascinate stars like Madonna and the queer scene. But who has she been?

The arte documentary by Grimme Prize-winning author Sylvie Kürsten ventures a self-portrait of Lempicka, narrated and played by German theater grande dame Nicole Heesters. At the same time she is commented anecdotally and knowledgeably by a documentary cast, including great-granddaughter Marisa de Lempicka, with German collector and designer Wolfgang Joop or the American Lempicka-musical-composer Matt Gould.
