While Paris and Rome receive the lion's share of architectural accolades in Europe, Slovenia's small capital of Ljubljana is an emerging architectural center and a symbol of sustainability (it was named the European Green Capital of 2016). The most notable Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles are on display at the ridiculously picturesque Ljubljana Castle in the city center. Joe Plenik, a late Slovenian architect, even modeled the city after ancient Athens, lending to its quaint outdoor cafes, bustling food markets, and stroll-worthy streets. Aside from its beautiful facades, Ljubljana is one of the most pleasant capitals you'll find: Its bike-friendly lanes have earned it a top spot on cycling tours with operators such as DuVine, and the recently opened InterContinental Ljubljana is attracting aquatic enthusiasts to its halls due to its prime location on the banks of the Ljubljanica River.
