When picturing a Roman Legionary I suspect most of us imagine first the Imperial Legions in the famed lorica segmentata armour, carrying square shields and the famed gladius. Before that, however, came the armies of the Republic. Curved scutum shields, horse hair plumes in their helmets iron chain-mail would have been most common. Exact colours are a matter of some debate, though red cloth would have been adopted as the 'standard' military uniform toward the end of the Republican period - I thoroughly recommend reading up from as many sources as possible to get a wider picture of what could have been correct!
Ultimately, the Rule of Cool applies in this case: go with whatever you think looks best and don't worry too much about it being a perfect fit, though you'll want to take a look at some reputable sources for ideas and inspiration. Two of my favourites are listed here:
