In this video, we review the eligibility requirements for different types of pilot certificates, and the FAR Part 61 training requirements for each of them. Knowing the requirements before you start training ensures that you will be eligible for the licenses you want to achieve, and well as gives you an idea of what to expect when training for the respective pilot certificate.
For the first necessary license, the Student Pilot License, the requirements are that the applicant is at least 16 years old, has at least a 3rd class Medical Certificate, and is able to read, speak and understand English. This certificate is necessary for Solo flight as part of your training, with an endorsement from your instructor.
To obtain a Private Pilot License (PPL), applicants need to meet the same medical and English requirements, but in this case, be at least 17 years old. They would also need an endorsement for their FAA Knowledge Test, as well as endorsements from their instructor for their flight proficiency in required maneuvers and emergency procedures, and meet other flight hour requirements.
Obtaining a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) has many of the same required endorsements for ground training, flight proficiency, and hours, along with a requirement of being 18 years old, and an Instrument Rating (IR) can be added to either PPL or CPL following endorsements on aeronautical knowledge and proficiency in flight, as well as hour requirements.
