On 17 May 1997, Marshal Mobutu was overthrown after 32 years of undivided rule in the former Zaire. A quarter of a century later, his luxurious palace in Kawele is a pile of ruins, but in his stronghold of Gbadolite, in the north-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the inhabitants think of him with nostalgia.
