In today’s video, our heavy equipment mechanic Keith goes through the steps required to change the hydraulic filters on a mini excavator. In this excavator maintenance video demonstration, we will be using a John Deere 35G. Processes to replace hydraulic filters are identical on a Hitachi ZX35U-2 mini excavator, and many of the steps that you see can also be used for other makes and models of excavator, such as CAT, Kubota, Volvo, CASE, and Hyundai.
Before you change the hydraulic oil return filter on a John Deere 35G, you must make sure that the hydraulic tank is vented. There will always be some pressure on it so if you don’t vent it, hydraulic oil will come out. It’s just like a radiator cap, simply turn it, push down, turn it some more and that will relieve any pressure in the tank.
On a John Deere 35G you’ll need to use a 35mm socket wrench to open the canister where the hydraulic return filter is located. Undo the bolts to open the hatch of the canister and expose the filter. The lid is off and you can pull out the spring. Now you’ll need to pull out the bypass valve. Get a drain pan ready and lift out the oil filter. Let the oil drain out and put the catch can beneath it so that you’re not spilling oil.
Always double check that the new filter is the same length, same diameters on the inside and outside on both ends. OEM and aftermarket filters must be checked to ensure you do not do damage to your excavator. Insert the new hydraulic return filter, give it a slight push to make sure it’s secure, and then re-insert the bypass filter. Then you can put the spring and cap on and bolt it tight again.
