The Roman denarius was first introduced after the second Punic war, a key event famous for being of the three wars fought between Carthage and Rome. During the second Punic war, Hannibal, regarded as one of the greatest military generals in history, lost the battle and ended the empire that Carthage had established in the Mediterranean, which left Rome in control of Spain. As a result of the second Punic war from 218 to 201 B.C., the Roman economy was devastated, and existing coinage was forced to be reduced in weight. The first Roman denarius was introduced in 267 B.C. and was equal to 'ten asses,' which translates to 'containing ten.' The coin was made from copper and weight-based; it was one Roman pound, a large cast coin. In 211 B.C., a silver denarius was created, setting a precedent for Roman coins' standards. Currency remained unchanged until the imperial period, when coins were given token value.
