The idea of the intergenerational contract unites societies around the globe. From Accra to Zürich, Buenos Aires to Yokohama, young and old people everywhere are taking responsibility for each other. But while in many Western countries the state views its duty as ensuring a balance between the generations, other people in large parts of the world have to rely on their families when it comes to education or providing for themselves in old age. In this discussion, we approach the phenomenon of intergenerational contracts, which differ greatly from place to place.
The journalist Ana P. Santos accompanied Filipino women who work thousands of kilometres from home as nannies or caregivers for the elderly in order to secure the survival of their families and to offer the next generation the chance of a better life. Completely different conditions can be found in Denmark, where Hosea Dutschke, the administrative director for health and care in the city of Aarhus, has introduced his Loving Municipality concept as a mission statement for his 7,000 employees; moving away from standardized procedures and towards a strategy tailored to the real needs and desires of each individual. In Spain, young entrepreneur Alberto Cabanes is building up "Adopta un Abuelo," a volunteer network independent from government structures that brings socially engaged young people together with lonely senior citizens.
