In this video, I will be comparing Solus OS and Ubuntu 18.04 side by Side and in depth, and as you know, I'll keep it short and on point. Solus is a very unique Linux distribution. For starters, it is not based on any other Linux distro. It has its own Budgie desktop environment which looks really gorgeous. It has its own repositories and a package manager. Solus OS is currently top 10 on distrowatch. But how does it compare against Ubuntu, which is another top Linux distribution?

Solus OS does not use any of the existing desktops but features its own Budgie desktop environment. Budgie desktop is a modern desktop which complies with the rules for a good UI design. At the first look, Solus doesn't fail to mesmerize you. The desktop is very polished and looks beautiful.
The application menu is very conveniently placed and is very intuitive. The bottom bar acts both as a dock and the running apps switcher.
Solus has a very organized notification area where both notifications and certain quick controls are placed really neat. I really liked the way they utilized the real estate here. Budgie is very modern and sleek looking. The rendering is good and the overall app integration is great.
Ubuntu, on the other hand, has a heavily customized Gnome desktop. The Gnome desktop is customized to look like the traditional Unity desktop of Ubuntu. Ubuntu's GNOME desktop has its own workflow. The desktop is very modern and looks really good. The overall look and feel of the OS is impressive.
The theming is gorgeous And a wide range of amazing wallpapers are included by default.
Ubuntu's desktop has a ton of extensions already added and customized so that users can get on with their work immediately.
Ubuntu and Solus have a pretty identical performance. But the Solus desktop has a slightly snappy app launches and window responsiveness. This is because Budgie desktop is marginally lighter when compared to Ubuntu's GNOME. GNOME has window animations and effects while Budgie goes light on the effects. This, of course, is visible only on lower end hardware.
If your computer has a decently powered graphics card, then this performance margin fades away. Now, this responsiveness is limited only to desktop responsiveness. On larger computational tasks and gaming, both the operating systems perform the same.
Solus is a rolling release Linux distro. But it is stability oriented and the updates are much more conservative. Solus OS updates lean towards stability over the providing bleeding edge software. This is really good if you prefer to have a rolling release Linux distro which also provides a high degree of dependability.
Talking about Ubuntu, it is a really solid operating system with a trust that it has built over a decade. ubuntu is the choice of professionals. It is deployed on servers which cannot afford a downtime of even a couple of seconds. And as for desktops, I use Ubuntu for all my development work and I must say, Ubuntu has been dependable and reliable 100% of times. A long-term support version of Ubuntu has a lifetime of 5 years, which is generally more than enough.
The LTS versions of Ubuntu are highly stable and you can use them if you have some critical operations running on them. And recently Ubuntu 18.04 s support life has been increased to 10 years from 5.
