Somalia gained independence from Italian Somaliland and British Somaliland in 1960. Minneapolis Somalis celebrated the 54th anniversary by building a nomadic women's hut and a male hut on Lake Street. Known for it's sea ports, many of the Somali people were nomads wandering the interior of the country. Minnesota has the largest population of Somalis in the United States. The celebration was organized by the Minneapolis Somali Artifacts and Cultural Museum.
