STORYLINE
Iraqi Kurds vowed to resist any incursion by Turkish military into the autonomous region of Kurdistan in northern Iraq, on Thursday, just one day after the Turkish parliament approved a possible cross-border offensive against Kurdish rebels in the area.
The parliamentary vote on Wednesday removed the last legal obstacle to a Turkish offensive, but there was no sign of imminent action as the United States and the Iraqi government urged restraint.
Turkey has been pressing Iraq and the United States to hit bases of the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, in northern Iraq - who they say have been conducting raids into Turkey.
AP Television footage showed PKK rebels carrying semi-automatic rifles and rocket propelled grenades in the mountains of northern Iraq on Wednesday.
Kurdish rebels have been fighting for autonomy in Turkey's southeast since 1984 in a conflict that has killed more than 30 thousand people.
Public anger over attacks by Kurdish guerrillas is high, but Turkish officials are mindful that two dozen campaigns in Iraq since the 1980s have failed to eradicate the PKK.
Kurdish leaders have warned that any Turkish incursion into northern Iraq would threaten the relative stability of the region and called on Ankara to seek peaceful means against violence from separatist rebels.
"Any violation of the Iraqi Kurdistan region will be faced with resistance from the Kurdish people with everything they have," Nawzad Hadi, Governor of Irbil told AP Television.
The PKK is branded a "terrorist" organisation by the US and the European Union - but the US is opposed to any military move into Iraq by Turkey.
