Clear Image Zoom is an image processing mode in many Sony cameras. It's technically digital zooming, but produces very impressive imaging that doesn't have the artificially processed appearance usually associated with digital zoom. I've tested Clear Image Zoom a number of times and am quite convinced it can serve nicely in place of changing out a lens.
