On Tuesday, Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health, said on Tuesday that the city is likely to experience a second COVID-19 wave because it has "yet to reach a high level of immunity in the community."
She added that the spread of COVID-19 will continue until a herd immunity is reached, when many people are infected and have recovered and have developed an immunity that lasts, or until a vaccine is developed.
Toronto Mayor John Tory also announced that the city has received three million ATSM level 2 surgical masks that were ordered from Canadian distributor A.M.G. Medical Inc. in late March.
Tory said he convened a meeting with the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) mayors where they have all agreed to share information on the cities’ financial positions to ensure the financial stability of local and regional governments in the GTHA area.
Tory added that the economic damage done by COVID-19 to the Toronto metropolitan area threatens provincial and national economies.
The Toronto metropolitan area alone is projected to lose some 355,000 jobs and 28 per cent of its GDP, along with $894 million in revenue and loss wages, $3.7 million in revenue losses for businesses, said Tory.
The city reported a total of 3,820 cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday and a total of 190 deaths from COVID-19.
