Dr. Jamie Van Gompel, a Professor of Neurology and Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, shares insights from his article appearing in the August 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where two different surgical treatment modalities for pituitary tumors were compared from within a single institution. He shares patient outcomes, cost analyses, surgical pluses and minuses, rates of rehospitalizations, and much more. Dr. Van Gompel notes one key to success is having a multidisciplinary approach. He notes that length of stay at Mayo Clinic was approximately one day compared to other institutions’ typical 3-day stay and that substantially fewer postoperative secondary treatments were required.
