9x12" pastel painting titled "The Old Ones of Missisquoi", painted en plein air on a grey day in Vermont on the Missisquoi River. Though I much prefer plein air on sunny days, in the northeast you have to get used to rainy, overcast days as well.
I painted this twisted old tree on my drive to Vermont a week or so ago. The day started out beautiful and sunny, but as soon as I hit Lake Champlain the clouds rolled in. Despite the cold wind that froze my fingers, I saw this old beauty and had to try to capture her. I finished just in time to get back in the car before the rain started.
Catherine LaPointe Vollmer is an artist from upstate New York, with a love of traveling to new places. She works in the style of Modern Impressionism. Modern impressionists seek to capture the fleeting effects of light through loose and expressive marks. "I am especially drawn to patterns of light and dark in nature because of the scarcity of the sun in my northern climate. For a few brief moments, the sun holds the power to transform the shape of my surroundings before disappearing again. I believe there is beauty in the humble and mundane, if you look at it in just the right light."
