Did you know you can refinish a furniture piece without completely stripping it?
This Century bar cabinet was in pretty good shape, but the top needed to be refinished and there was damage on the sides, but the rest didn't need a full refinish.
I stripped the top and re-stained it. I had some problems with the stain probably because of the extreme heat. I wasn’t getting the tone of wood I wanted, so I decided to tone with wood with a mixture of dye stain and topcoat. It worked wonderfully! For the body, I cleaned it with a 50/50 mixture of denatured alcohol and water, gave it a good scuff sand with a high grit sandpaper and applied plastic wood to any areas that needed repair. After sanding the plastic wood, I applied a coat of gel stain using General Finishes in Nutmeg. For the areas that I touched up, I used a slighter darker gel stain by Varathane called Hickory. It helped blend in the repairs. After the gel stain dried, I applied Osmo Polyx oil to seal it.
To summarize, I used these two methods of toning to help me achieve this look:
1. I cleaned, scuff sanded, and then re-stained the sides with gel stain.
2. I mixed dye stain with the top coat to tone the finish on the top to darken and even out the tone of the wood.
