The death penalty is alien to me as a Brit, but Ohio has just introduced a somewhat progressive new law allow people with mental illness to appeal being given the death penalty. Its a start at least. On this video, I explain what this new law is and how I, as a forensic psychiatrist, assess someone for a mental illness and if and how this affected them committing a criminal offence. Specifically, focusing on the defence of diminished responsibility for murder!
