Melasma can be successfully treated by your dermatologist. The most important thing to do is you have to use sunscreens and protect yourself from sun exposure. Sunscreens when applied , have to be used once in three hours, throughout the day, especially if you are outdoors. Your doctor may prescribe you some topical and oral agents to treat melasma. The topical agents include skin lightening agents like triple combinations, hydroquinone, kogic acid, glycolic acid, arbutin, and vitamin C and various other cosmeticals . Oral agents include antioxidants and a drug called tranexemic acid which has to be taken for upto 6 months. Melasma generally subsides after a few months. In resistant cases for melasma, you may need, chemical peels like glycolic acid peels aloe peels or microdermal abrasion. Melasma has to be treated indefinitely. It needs maintenance therapy. Strict sun exposure is the most important thing you have to do for maintenance.
