Inkscape’s Paint Bucket Tool is very handy for adding offset borders to designs, filling bounder areas, tracing outlines, colouring designs, etc. Unlike many of Inkscape’s tools, this one works as a raster image tool, so it works just as well on PNG and jpg images as it does on vector art. Making it a perfect choice for Cricut users that want a simple way to add a border to a PNG image, or for graphic designs that combine both raster image and vector art.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how the Paint Bucket tool (or Fill tool) works, what the settings are for and how to adjust them to get the best possible results. I’ll show you how you can change the settings so it looks at opacity – great for working with images with transparent backgrounds. I’ll show you how to set what size gaps the tool will flow through and more. I’ll also demonstrate how you can select a range of colours to fill, or how to select separate areas with the same colour.
By the end of this video, you will have a good understanding of how the paint bucket tool works, how you can adjust it to achieve the result you want, and you’ll have a good idea how to trouble shoot, when things are working as you’d expect.
A little bit of knowledge can go a long way.
